New Electric Off-Roader from Jeep
Jeep introduces the fully electric 2026 Recon, which has received the Trail Rated certification. This means the vehicle has passed a series of challenging tests to confirm its ability to overcome water obstacles and difficult off-road terrain.
Key Model Characteristics
Relevance of Market Launch
The launch of the new electric off-roader is taking place amidst a slowdown in electric vehicle sales. Other manufacturers, such as Ram, are canceling plans for electric off-roaders, and Jeep’s first electric model, the Wagoneer S, is facing sales difficulties. The question arises: is now the right time to introduce an electric off-roader at such a price?
Technical Features of the Powertrain
The Recon is equipped with two motors located on the axles, which together produce 650 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque. This is 50 hp more than the most powerful version of the Wagoneer S, which is built on the same STLA Large platform. Despite a slightly shorter range compared to the Wagoneer S, the Recon compensates with genuine off-road capabilities.
Only the Recon has received the Trail Rated certification, confirming its ability to overcome difficult obstacles.
Off-Road Capability and Control
The Moab trim includes 33-inch tires, locking differentials, Selec-Terrain drive modes, including an exclusive Rock mode, and the Selec-Speed Control system to facilitate movement on slopes and rocks. The 100 kWh battery is protected by steel skid plates, and the suspension is reinforced to handle the high torque.
Comparison with Classic Models
The Recon has an independent suspension, providing better on-road comfort, but falls short of the Wrangler in approach/departure angles and ground clearance. For example, the Recon’s ground clearance is 9.1 inches, while the Wrangler Moab’s is 11.1 inches. However, for most drivers, the Recon’s capabilities will be more than sufficient.
Design and Functionality
The Recon’s design retains classic Jeep features: square shapes, a vertical grille, and proportions. Modern elements, such as an illuminated grille, hidden door handles, and an optional Sky One-Touch roof, add modernity to the vehicle. The doors, rear door glass, and side windows can be removed without special tools.
Interior and Technology
The cabin features a 26-inch display consisting of a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 14.5-inch touchscreen – the largest among all Jeep models. The Uconnect 5 system allows the use of the Trails App to track the vehicle’s pitch and roll. The Alpine audio system has speakers under the seats so the sound isn’t lost when the doors are removed.
Price and Prospects
Production of the Recon will begin at the Toluca plant early next year. The starting price is $65,000 for the Moab trim. Other trims and less powerful versions are expected to appear over time, which may lower the cost. The electric vehicle market conditions remain uncertain, so the Recon’s success will depend on demand and competition.
Jeep is betting on the electrification of its off-roaders, despite market challenges. The Recon combines high technical specifications with the brand’s traditional toughness, but its acceptance by buyers will depend on how well it can convince them of its durability and practicality in an environment where many automakers are revising their electric strategies. The growth of charging infrastructure and manufacturer support will also be key factors in attracting customers.
