Confirmation of Electric Off-Road Vehicle Production
Jeep has officially announced that the electric Recon model, whose release has been repeatedly delayed, will indeed be launched into production. This off-road vehicle will be built on the STLA Large platform, which is already used for the Wagoneer S, and production will begin at the Stellantis plant in the Mexican city of Toluca.
Modern Challenges for Electric Vehicles
The electric vehicle market in the US is facing certain difficulties. The Trump administration’s policies aimed at supporting traditional fuel, as well as the cancellation of federal tax incentives for electric vehicles, have slowed the growth of demand for this type of transport. Because of this, a number of automakers are revising their electrification strategies, postponing or scaling back previously planned projects.
Jeep’s Position on the Future of the Recon EV
Despite the general trends, Jeep does not intend to abandon its plans. After Stellantis discontinued the development of the Ram 1500 REV, assumptions emerged that the Recon EV might face the same fate. However, brand representatives assure that the project is active and preparing for serial production.
Expected Release Timeline
The Recon EV concept car was presented back in 2022, with the initial launch planned for 2024. For a long time, information about the model was limited, but according to Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf, the production version will debut in the near future, and sales will begin next spring.
We have a great car. We’ve already built it. We have to sell it, we have to learn. I don’t know how many will be sold. I’m not too worried about that.
Broderdorf also noted that the production of the Recon EV will be established at the plant in Toluca alongside the Wagoneer S, Compass, and Cherokee models, and the enterprise has sufficient flexibility to adjust production volumes according to demand.
We can change and move production. If the Recon volume is small, that’s fine. If we have to sell more Cherokees, so be it.
Technical Features and Potential Specifications
Detailed technical specifications of the Recon EV remain unknown for now. It is expected that the model may receive powertrains similar to the Wagoneer S, including a 100.5 kWh battery and all-wheel drive with two motors. However, since Jeep plans to release a fully electric Wrangler version, the Recon EV is unlikely to have 600 hp to avoid competing with the future model.
Market Success Factors
The success of the Recon EV will largely depend on its price. If the model hits the right price segment, it could interest off-road enthusiasts looking for new solutions. However, the high cost and limited range could complicate its promotion even at the start of sales.
The planned release of the Jeep Recon EV indicates that the manufacturer is willing to experiment in the electric off-road vehicle market, despite external challenges. Production flexibility and a learning-oriented strategy allow the company to adapt to changes in demand, which could become a key advantage in conditions of uncertainty. This model could open up new opportunities for the brand if it manages to find a balance between technology, price, and consumer expectations.
