Jeep Recalls Hybrid Vehicles That Failed After Software Update

Recall of Jeep Wrangler Due to Failed Update

Jeep has initiated a recall of nearly 25,000 Wrangler 4xe hybrid SUVs after an over-the-air software update led to serious issues. Specifically, an error in the software caused malfunctions in the hybrid system, which could result in a sudden loss of power while driving.

Driver Complaints and Manufacturer Response

Vehicle owners reported unusual phenomena, such as complete system failure that rendered the vehicles immobile. However, fortunately, no accidents have been recorded due to this problem. The government highway safety agency noted that the update may have disrupted the communication between the telematics module and the hybrid processor, causing the latter to reboot.

Scale of the Problem and Stellantis Actions

Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, learned about the situation on October 14 when regulatory authorities contacted them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported over 200 complaints, and Canadian authorities received seven similar reports. The company immediately launched an investigation, discovering hundreds of incidents related to this issue.

The problem was so widespread that Transport Canada also contacted Jeep on the same day, citing numerous discussions on forums.

Temporary Solution and Future Steps

While a final method to eliminate the failure is being developed, Jeep has already implemented interim measures by changing the backend policy to prevent loss of propulsion. Details of these changes are limited, but they are aimed at stabilizing the operation of hybrid systems.
