JLR plans massive expansion in the US
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is intensifying its focus on the United States market. A new partnership with the Stellantis concern could lead to local vehicle production on American soil. The Defender brand, which is now a separate unit, plays a key role in this process. There is a possibility that special models will be created for North America.
Ambitious management goals
During a recent investor presentation, company CEO P-B Balaji noted that North America is already the largest market for JLR. He emphasized that the region has ‘significant growth potential.’ The executive added that he wants the company’s US business to reach volumes equal to JLR’s current global figures.
Collaboration with Stellantis
To achieve this goal, JLR will rely on collaboration with Stellantis. In May, the companies signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to discuss potential joint work opportunities. The partnership will focus on expanding the Defender brand and ‘exploring new customer-focused opportunities in North America.’
Possible development scenarios
Jaguar Land Rover has not yet confirmed specific plans. One option is creating a version of the current Defender specifically adapted for the American market. However, development and production setup could be too expensive. A more realistic path is considered to be the launch of an entirely new model under the Defender brand, built on an existing Stellantis platform, possibly borrowed from Jeep. Rumors suggest both an SUV and a pickup truck are under consideration.
Big bet on America
‘To fully realize the potential of our brands, we will increase our focus on North America, our largest market. Growing demand for luxury goods, along with the strong preference we see for our brands, indicates significant growth potential. In addition to accelerating our existing offerings, we are also exploring new high-potential segments for our Defender brand, allowing us to offer bespoke luxury products and experiences to even more of our customers in the US,’ Balaji stated.
Advantages of local production
Collaboration with Stellantis will allow JLR to set up production of the new model in the US much more easily than if the company acted independently. Stellantis already has a strong manufacturing base in the country. The new Defender could be integrated into an existing plant without much difficulty, especially if the models share a common platform. Producing the Defender in the US, rather than importing it from Slovakia as is currently done, would also avoid paying a 15% import duty.
This step is a logical continuation of JLR’s strategy aimed at strengthening its position in the world’s most profitable region. Using Stellantis platforms allows for significantly reduced development costs and time to market, which is critical in a highly competitive environment. Additionally, localizing production protects the company from trade barriers and currency fluctuations, making the business more stable. If the plans materialize, the Defender could gain not only new models but also a new ‘home base,’ fundamentally changing its market positioning.
