Cybertruck Owner Racked Up 100,000 Miles on Lyft: Fuel Savings and Unexpected Costs
Most Cybertruck buyers seem to want to make a statement. However, this story is about an owner who uses the vehicle to earn a living. After driving 100,000 miles, primarily on Lyft in Nashville, he says the pickup is both a frugal workhorse and a financial blow without a warranty. Despite everything he has been through, he still wants to get this truck to a million miles.
Driver Experience: Savings and Comfort
A user named LyftDr1ver on the CybertruckOwnersClub forum shared his story earlier this week. He says he works over seven hours straight, which explains how he accumulated such mileage.
Driving a regular pickup truck every day would cost a significant amount of money on gas or diesel. This driver says he spends about $12 per day, which equates to roughly $350 per month. If you have been to a gas station recently, you know how low those operating costs are. Tesla has other advantages.
The driver reports that passengers like the interior space, the panoramic roof, and the smooth ride. The audio system is also a plus, and the cargo bed is “incredibly functional and spacious.” One thing that might be surprising is that the driver feels comfortable in heavy traffic, despite the vehicle’s size, thanks to the steer-by-wire system. Of course, there are drawbacks too.
Quality Issues and Expensive Repairs
Because this is an early version of the Cybertruck, there are many build quality issues. The cargo bed cover leaks, the suspension makes a knocking sound that doesn’t go away, the wireless charger overheats phones, and the initial set of tires wore out after 40,000 miles. He also notes that the battery has degraded to approximately 299 miles of range at a full charge.
However, the worst was the repair of the power conversion system, which failed at the 60,000-mile mark. The bill came to $7,200. As the owner says:
“Tesla shows no mercy when you’re outside the warranty.”
The fuel savings quickly disappear after a bill like that, but it’s worth noting that most gasoline or diesel vehicles would also have had significant maintenance costs at such mileage.
Future Plans: One Million Miles
Currently, the owner has two big hopes. First, that the pickup doesn’t break down, and second, that he can drive it until the odometer shows seven digits. These goals seem ambitious, but perhaps they are achievable.
This story shows that even the most modern electric vehicles can have serious reliability issues, especially under heavy use. While the fuel savings are significant, the cost of out-of-warranty repairs can be very high. At the same time, the driver’s experience suggests that the Cybertruck can be an effective work tool if potential risks are considered. His decision to continue using the vehicle, despite the problems, underscores that for some owners, the advantages of an electric vehicle outweigh the drawbacks, especially in commercial operation.
