Canada Outraged Over Interrogation of Stellantis CEO Regarding Jeep Production Relocation

Production of New Jeep Compass Relocated from Canada to the USA

The automaker Stellantis is again under pressure due to the decision to relocate production of the new generation Jeep Compass from Canada to the United States. The company confirmed that the compact SUV will now be manufactured at a plant in Illinois instead of Ontario, which continues to cause political tension north of the border.

Key Points of the Situation

Reaction and Consequences

Just two weeks after Canada’s threats of legal action against Stellantis, the company’s President, Jeff Hines, was summoned to testify before members of parliament in the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology.

Hines described the decision as not being taken lightly but noted that current economic and trade conditions make it difficult to produce the Compass in Canada. His words seemed to hint at the federal government’s move to limit the number of Stellantis vehicles that can be imported duty-free after the company changed its plans.

We are aware of the impact these decisions have had. We need stability in trade negotiations so we can adapt and invest accordingly. We want to continue producing vehicles in Brampton and offer something that works, but we need an environment that allows us to do that.

Prospects for the Brampton Plant

It was initially planned that Brampton would start production of the new Compass in February 2026. Instead, Stellantis is relocating production to Illinois as part of a $600 million investment to revive that facility. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown suggested that the company came under pressure from the Trump administration to favor US operations at Canada’s expense.

The Brampton plant has been idle since early 2024 as it was being retooled for the Compass program. Hines noted that the plant is not closed, and although workers remain laid off, they will get first choice among 1,500 jobs that Stellantis is adding at its Windsor assembly site.

Future of Production

For now, the future of the Brampton plant remains uncertain. Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently stated that Stellantis informed him of plans to find a new model for production at the factory. Hines added that the automaker is considering several different potential options but is not yet ready to make a commitment.

When we get stability in the current environment, I believe it could benefit the plant and our customers across Canada.

This situation illustrates the complexity of global production decisions in the modern automotive sector, where trade agreements, political pressure, and economic feasibility are often intertwined. Relocating production can have significant socio-economic consequences for regions losing jobs, while creating new opportunities elsewhere. The stability of the regulatory environment remains a key factor for automakers’ long-term investment decisions worldwide.
