Canadians Demand to Allow Import of Previously Banned Electric Vehicles

Canadian Dealers and Electric Vehicle Associations Demand Regulatory Changes

Canadian car buyers face high prices and limited choices, especially in the electric vehicle segment. To solve this problem, dealers and groups like Electric Mobility Canada are calling on the government to allow the import of European models that currently do not meet Canadian safety standards. This could bypass American tariffs and expand the range of options for buyers.

However, Transport Canada, the country’s regulatory body, expresses doubts about the safety of such vehicles. Representatives state that European standards may not align with Canadian conditions, for example, due to differences in bumper and headlight requirements. However, the head of Electric Mobility Canada, Daniel Breton, refutes these arguments:

If a car is safe for European roads, where higher speeds are permitted, then it is good enough for Canada too.

Are European Cars Really Unsafe for Canada?

A Transport Canada representative, Hisham Ayun, noted that European crash tests might be less stringent due to different operating conditions. However, the majority of Canadians, according to a survey, support the idea of importing European electric vehicles. 70% of 2585 respondents believe it will help make eco-transport more accessible.

The question remains open: will the government be able to find a balance between safety and market needs? For now, discussions are ongoing, but growing public support could accelerate the decision-making process. Meanwhile, critics remind that Canada should consider not only short-term benefits but also the long-term consequences for the local automotive industry.
