A 1991 Ferrari F40 that belonged to American automotive executive Lee Iacocca has been put up for auction. Over 35 years, the supercar has covered only 515 km. It is estimated at $4–5 million and will be sold without a reserve price. RM Sotheby’s reports.
The car with chassis No. 87345 is the 94th of 213 F40 examples built for the U.S. market. The car was completed in December 1990 and delivered to Iacocca directly at the Ferrari factory.
Ferrari F40 has a special provenance
The first owner’s name is recorded in the original warranty booklet. Accompanying the car is a plaque indicating it was built especially for Lee Iacocca. The package also includes instructions in a leather case, tools, and a cover.
In 1992, the odometer showed 116 km; in 2006, 351 km; and at the time of sale in 2012, 455 km. The current owner has kept the Ferrari for 14 years and hardly used it.
Before the auction, Ferrari of Newport Beach performed a $40,000 service. The car received new spark plugs, a battery, and Pirelli P Zero tires.
Rare supercar reaches 324 km/h
The Ferrari F40 is powered by a 2.9-liter V8 with twin IHI turbochargers and a five-speed manual gearbox. The engine produces 471 hp and 576 Nm. Acceleration to 60 mph (97 km/h) takes 3.8 seconds, and the top speed is 324 km/h.
The body is made of carbon fiber and Kevlar, underpinned by a steel tubular frame. The cabin features composite racing seats with fabric upholstery, strap door handles, perforated pedals, and plexiglass windows.
Ferrari built 1,315 examples of the F40. The presented car will be sold on August 15, 2026, at an auction in Monterey.
