Polestar’s Plans for High-Performance Versions
Despite actively preparing to launch four new electric cars by 2028, Polestar is already making plans to expand its range of high-performance versions. The brand’s management emphasizes that the growth of the model lineup will not come at the expense of dynamic characteristics.
Development Strategy from the CEO
Polestar CEO Michael Losseler, during a meeting with journalists at the company’s headquarters in Gothenburg, spoke about the brand’s future. He noted that the company aims for a more consistent and clear approach in creating performance cars.
We want to focus more on performance, because that’s where we can become even better in the future – on the track, in acceleration characteristics, and in being above others.
Overcoming Challenges and Preserving Expertise
These ambitions are voiced against the backdrop of challenging times for the company. Recently, Polestar was forced to close its last research center in the UK and secure a significant loan from its parent company, Geely. Despite this, Losseler is confident that the brand has retained the necessary technical potential and expertise to compete with giants like BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, and Audi RS.
BST as a Separate High-Performance Sub-Brand
A key element of this strategy will be the expanded use of the “BST” badge. According to plans, it will transform from a limited-edition experiment based on the Polestar 2 into a full-fledged high-performance sub-brand. Interestingly, Polestar itself was once the performance division of Volvo.
Future Candidates for BST Versions
Although the executive did not name specific details, among the possible candidates for receiving “charged” BST versions are expected:
Potential of the Flagship Polestar 5 Model
As for the Polestar 5 grand tourer, its Performance version already develops 872 hp. This means that an even more powerful modification will be able to seriously compete with models like the Audi RS e-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.
Concepts and Shifts in Priorities
In 2024, the company presented the track-focused Polestar Concept BST, based on the Polestar 6 roadster. However, the launch of this model was postponed as the company focused on developing more mass-market and commercially successful cars.
The announced plans indicate Polestar’s desire to find its niche in the competitive premium electric vehicle market, combining innovative design with driver-oriented characteristics. The emphasis on performance could become a key differentiating factor from competitors, especially for an audience that values not only environmental friendliness but also the emotion of driving. The success of this strategy will largely depend on the brand’s financial stability and its ability to timely implement new developments into production models.
