New Volkswagen Concepts Return to Classic Door Handles
Volkswagen is in the process of significant changes. The brand is preparing a range of new electric vehicles, such as the ID.Cross and the fully electric Polo, which have already been presented in a form close to production. The company is also rethinking its design to make its cars more attractive to buyers. This includes a return to more familiar elements, such as traditional door handles instead of flush ones, which are popular among electric vehicle manufacturers.
Opinion of the Volkswagen Chief
At the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized the importance of familiar design solutions. He noted that buyers expect familiar elements in the cars they choose. Schäfer said:
People expect a certain familiarity with the vehicle, with the brand they are investing in. Features need to be simple. For example, door handles. It’s nice to have such flush handles, but they are terrible to use, so we are definitely installing conventional door handles on cars, and customers appreciate that. This is the feedback we receive.
Safety Aspects and Global Impact
Safety issues related to flush handles are also being discussed internationally. In China, regulators are considering a ban on such handles due to safety concerns and the results of accident investigations. This decision could affect automakers worldwide, forcing them to reconsider their design approaches.
Plans for Electrification Transformation
Thomas Schäfer also spoke about the future of Volkswagen’s electrification. He believes that electric vehicles are the best choice for most buyers but doubts whether infrastructure and demand will grow fast enough for a full transition to electric vehicles in the EU by 2035. Schäfer noted:
The end goal is clear. The question is, can we achieve it by 2035? Will the growth in demand and charging infrastructure happen fast enough for 2035 to be a realistic goal? Or does it need to be pushed back a few years – this requires review.
Despite growing competition and challenges, Volkswagen continues to move confidently towards a future where sustainability and convenience are combined. The company demonstrates that it listens to customer feedback and adapts its products to real needs, which could be the key to long-term success in the market.
