Kia updates its large SUV: hybrid powertrain and brutal design

Updated Kia Telluride: what’s new?

Spy photos have captured the updated Kia Telluride during testing in the USA. The crossover has received a more streamlined design and two new powertrains, including a hybrid option. The appearance of an off-road version with a more powerful suspension and aggressive front bumper design is also expected.

The Kia Telluride, which debuted in 2019, quickly became one of the most popular three-row crossovers in the USA. Last year, its sales amounted to 115,504 units, making it the brand’s second best-selling vehicle on the American market.

Exterior and features

The front of the updated Telluride has received a new radiator grille with characteristic vertical LED headlights. The manufacturer offers two bumper options: a standard one and a more aggressive one for the off-road version. The latter stands out with black trim and, likely, red towing hooks.

“The crossover retains its recognizable style but becomes more refined,” experts note.

The side body lines have become smoother, with integrated door handles and updated mirrors. The rear has remained more conservative, with familiar taillights and a silver trim on the bumper.

Technical updates

The Telluride is expected to inherit some technical solutions from the Hyundai Palisade, including an increased wheelbase. The main innovation will be the replacement of the 3.8-liter V6 with a new 3.5-liter engine producing 287 hp. However, the main news will be the hybrid version with a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine and electric motors, which will deliver 329 hp and 459 Nm of torque.

The hybrid variant will have higher fuel efficiency—over 30 miles per gallon on the highway, which is significantly better than the conventional version’s figures. However, this will affect the maximum trailer weight, which will be about 1,814 kg.

The Telluride updates indicate Kia’s desire to maintain its leading position in the three-row crossover segment. The introduction of a hybrid version will attract buyers looking for more economical yet powerful options. At the same time, the off-road modification will expand the target audience by offering additional capabilities for outdoor enthusiasts.
