Colorado simplifies the process of obtaining a driver’s license for illegal immigrants without a Social Security number

Colorado simplifies the process of obtaining driver’s licenses for drivers. Now illegal immigrants no longer need to have a Social Security number or tax return.

The state hopes that more immigrants will take the driving test, making roads safer.

The President and his administration want to deport millions of illegal immigrants from the USA, but 1,700 miles (2,740 km) west of Washington lies Colorado, where lawmakers are offering foreigners an olive branch. They are making it easier for illegal immigrants to legally drive cars on public roads.

Starting at the end of this month, it will be much easier for illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in this state. The safety law, approved by Governor Jared Polis last summer and valid from March 31, removes the requirement to present a valid Social Security number when applying for a license.

Applicants also no longer need to submit a Colorado tax return or prove residency in the state for two years. Instead, immigrants can sign an affidavit stating that they are currently residents of the state, and only need to show a passport, military ID, or other identification from their country.

Colorado lawmakers hope that allowing more immigrants to legally get on the road will make roads safer. Since they have had difficulty obtaining licenses so far, many illegal immigrants were driving without licenses or insurance.

Nearly 40 percent of fatal accidents in Colorado in 2024 involved drivers without a valid license, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.

By making it easier for immigrants to obtain licenses, the state hopes that many will opt to take the driving test, better preparing them for participation in traffic, reducing the chances of injuries and fatalities resulting from collisions. However, unlike regular driver’s licenses, these permits do not allow a person to legally drive in another state.

There are still other obstacles that might prevent immigrants from obtaining licenses, including lack of funds and possible language barriers. However, as shown in the 9News video report (above), there are bilingual driving schools that can at least handle this second issue.

Colorado is not the only state that allows illegal immigrants to apply for licenses. Another eighteen states already have a simplified application process.
