Former Formula 1 driver tested the Honda HRC Civic Type R and said it is ‘significantly better’

Honda Civic Type R HRC: First tests at Suzuka Circuit

Honda has long discussed the possibility of turning Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) upgrades for the Civic Type R into production accessories, and this has now been confirmed with a video. The latest clip shows the HRC-prepared Type R at Suzuka Circuit, where the equipment was tested in real-world conditions for the first time.

This is the first look at how parts developed for motorsport are used in a combat mode. HRC President Koji Watanabe recently confirmed that the kit will go on sale as accessories in Japan and the United States, rather than as part of a limited series of cars. This means that owners of existing Type R models will also be able to obtain these components.

Impressions of Takuma Sato

The test program at Suzuka followed previous stages of work on simulators and in the wind tunnel. Behind the wheel at this stage was Takuma Sato, a former Formula 1 and IndyCar driver. He noted that the upgraded HRC car has become more race-oriented and stiffer, with sharper responses. His verdict:

“much better” than the standard version.

An HRC development engineer described the goal of the package as combining “sharp response with ease of handling”.

The prototypes captured on track have lost some of the camouflage that was on the original concept at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. However, the modified panels themselves remain hidden, with a full reveal expected in the coming months.

Aerodynamics, Akrapovic exhaust and adjustable rear wing

At the front, the bumper features a more pronounced splitter and optimized air intakes that feed air to the intercooler with HRC branding. The car’s profile is complemented by widened fenders with integrated vents and more prominent side skirts. At the rear, HRC has added an adjustable wing and an aerodynamic bumper extension. The diffuser houses three tailpipes of the Akrapovic exhaust system.

It is not yet known whether HRC will offer chassis and performance upgrades beyond the confirmed changes to the cooling and exhaust systems. The turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC engine currently produces 326 hp (243 kW) and 420 Nm of torque in the Japanese specification, exceeding the 315 hp (235 kW) of the US version. Even a modest increase in power could push the Type R into an interesting performance zone.

Potential records and interior updates

Honda may use the new parts to attempt to break the front-wheel-drive lap record at Suzuka and other famous circuits. The rival VW Golf GTI Edition 50 recently lapped the Nürburgring in 7:44.523, barely beating the 7:44.881 time set by the Civic Type R in 2023.

One small detail caught the attention of Japanese publication Creative Trend. The 9-inch touchscreen in the HRC car runs the new Google Built-in infotainment system, the same as in the updated Civic and the new Prelude. This suggests that the Type R may soon receive minor model year updates, likely coinciding with the release of the HRC package.

Thus, Honda is not merely offering a set of accessories, but creating a platform for further refinement of the Civic Type R, which could include both performance upgrades and technological improvements. This makes the car even more attractive to enthusiasts seeking maximum performance from their hot hatch, while also allowing the company to remain competitive in the battle for lap records.
