Project Update
One of Nick Raymond Scherr’s projects, which is the driving force behind the New Age Nissan Xterra project for the 2025 SEMA show, has received a visible boost in development.
Nick reported that this version will be equipped with a VK56 5.6-liter V8 engine from Nissan paired with a six-speed manual transmission, which is expected to provide an exciting driving experience.
Technical Features
Earlier, he shared a series of interior and exterior photos showcasing the progress of the project. While the base remains the classic Xterra, the assembly includes numerous components from the 2022 Nissan Frontier and newer, combining familiar design features with updated mechanical and functional elements.
This custom off-roader retains the spirit of the original Xterra but adds a number of key updates borrowed from the 2022 Nissan Frontier and newer. This includes a complete front-end replacement (headlights, grille, bumper, and fenders), as well as front doors, mirrors, and a full instrument panel with an updated multimedia system.
A vented carbon fiber hood and additional LED roof lighting are also planned, awaiting final installation. The body will later be painted in a bright, attention-grabbing color to highlight the new elements. Off-road improvements such as larger tires and a modified suspension are planned.

Historical Context
At a time when every automaker is busy reviving historic model names like the Bronco and Land Cruiser to capitalize on the growing demand for rugged off-roaders, Nissan has remained noticeably quiet.
In fact, the brand has faced financial challenges and merger negotiation delays, while promising a reboot of its future model lineup. But one of the strangest gaps in its recent history has been the disappearance of the Xterra model since 2015.
The good news is that Nissan’s long-term product development plan includes a boxy off-roader scheduled for 2027, which could continue the Xterra’s off-road spirit. Initially, the company planned to make it fully electric, but plans have changed, and it is now expected to be equipped with a hybrid V6 engine.
Meanwhile, fans can marvel at the two concepts for SEMA, which envision a more traditional, gasoline-powered version of the Xterra for 2026.
Blend of Past and Present

We first reported on the Nissan Project X a few months ago. It is a project born from the passion of Nick Raymond Scherr, a video blogger and dedicated Nissan enthusiast who works at Avondale Nissan in Arizona.
When he’s not helping fans get new Z models without dealer markups, he dedicates his free time to a long-term dream: a modern interpretation of the Xterra for 2026.
Although Nissan and Nismo are not directly involved in the development of the two Project X projects, they are aware of the project. After a teaser earlier this year, Carscoops received exclusive information and created sketch renderings of one of the concepts, offering a clearer idea of what lies ahead.
Combining Components

These Xterra concepts are not simple restorations—they are full-fledged combinations of Nissan’s off-road heritage. Donor parts include elements from the second-generation Xterra (2005–2015), third-generation Pathfinder (2005–2012), and the modern Frontier (2022–present).
The sketches show a rugged off-roader equipped with Frontier-style headlights, grille, and taillights for a more modern look. The main body follows the Xterra, while the side proportions are borrowed from the older Pathfinder.
Keeping with SEMA project traditions, the off-roaders will be equipped with roof rails, off-road bumpers, protective bars, and spare tire mounts. Both research projects will also feature upgraded interiors with the latest technology, one with a standard two-row seating layout and the other with three rows.
In the spirit of SEMA, both projects will include expected equipment: roof rails, off-road bumpers, protective bars, and swing-away tire mounts. Inside, everything will be modernized with contemporary technology and amenities.
One version will have a traditional two-row configuration, while the other will be extended to accommodate three rows of seats.
Power and Character

Both projects will be based on a frame chassis and equipped with four-wheel drive. Expect modern off-road technology and some components from Nismo for added performance.
As for the engine, this is where it gets most interesting. One version will get a 3.8-liter V6 from Nissan, while the other will be equipped with a powerful V8, expected to provide drama and presence.
Scherr, also known as “Nismo Nick,” will document the assembly process on his Instagram page, where fans can follow the project’s development. And although these are fan-made concepts, they have received official support from Nissan North America and Nismo, adding further legitimacy to the entire project.
We will update this article when new details emerge ahead of the presentation at SEMA later this year.

These projects demonstrate how community enthusiasm can influence the auto industry, offering alternative development paths for models that manufacturers may not have considered. Support from Nissan and Nismo indicates the company’s potential interest in bringing back the Xterra, especially in the context of a growing market for rugged off-roaders. The success of these concepts at SEMA could be an important step for the brand’s future decisions regarding the revival of the iconic model.
