In the world of automotive racing, truly unexpected duels occur. One of them is the confrontation between the legendary Bugatti Chiron and the new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. If previously the Chiron was considered the unsurpassed benchmark of performance, its position has now been shaken under the pressure of younger and more technologically advanced rivals.
Financial gap and technical specifications
It is worth immediately noting the colossal difference in price: the new Corvette ZR1X starts at approximately $209,000, while used Bugatti Chirons on the market cost over $3.5 million. Thus, the American sports car costs less than a tenth of the price of the French hypercar.
Drag racing: an unexpected result
Brooks from the DragTimes channel decided to test how his new ZR1X would fare against the mighty Chiron over a quarter mile. They conducted a series of runs — both from a standstill and from a rolling start. The results turned out to be unexpected.
In the first run, the Corvette took off much faster than the Chiron, better utilizing its power. The Bugatti, on the other hand, spun all four wheels due to the heat in Arizona. At the halfway point, the Corvette was ahead of its rival by more than 10 car lengths — and the Chiron could not close this gap.
In the second run, the Bugatti driver got a better start and even had a slight advantage. However, the Corvette quickly made up for lost ground and confidently won again. The reason is instant power and excellent traction provided by the front electric motor.
Rolling race: could the Chiron redeem itself?
During a rolling race at 30 mph (48 km/h), the Bugatti should have had the advantage. In the first run, the Chiron indeed pulled ahead and won, although the Corvette was right next to it. The Corvette driver made a gear shifting mistake, so they decided to repeat the run — this time with the transmission in automatic mode.
Technical comparison
Thanks to its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor, the Corvette ZR1X produces 1,250 hp and 973 lb-ft (1,319 Nm) of torque. For comparison, the standard Chiron has 1,500 hp and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm). The Corvette’s key advantage is its lower weight: 3,914 lbs (1,775 kg) versus 4,400 lbs (1,995 kg) for the Bugatti.
Thus, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, despite having less power, managed to beat the legendary Bugatti Chiron twice in drag racing thanks to better launches, lower weight, and a more efficient hybrid system. This clearly demonstrates how modern technology and engineering allow cars from a much cheaper segment to challenge the world’s most expensive hypercars. Although the Chiron retains the advantage in pure power, in real racing conditions, road grip and instant throttle response proved decisive.
