Cruz Accuses Ford’s Farley of Taxpayer Fund Extortion and Claims He’s Afraid to Testify

Planned Hearings Turned into Political Drama

Key U.S. Senate hearings, where automakers were to be questioned about the rapid rise in new car prices, were planned to be straightforward. Instead, they quickly turned into a political show with a main subplot — the refusal of Ford’s CEO to appear and the harsh reaction of the committee chairman.

Accusations of Cowardice and Wastefulness

After Jim Farley refused to attend the hearing on the scheduled date, Senator Ted Cruz did not hold back in his remarks. In an interview with Politico, he stated that Farley is “too scared to testify before Congress.”

“Whatever it was, it seems Jim Farley was terribly afraid to testify before Congress. I don’t know if he was afraid because of the $19 billion loss for Ford shareholders due to the failed Ford Lightning, or if he was ashamed of trying to cheat American taxpayers out of hundreds of millions of dollars by playing with the rules on the expiration of the electric vehicle tax credit. But for some reason, he made the decision that testifying before Congress is too scary for him.”

Cruz also did not rule out the possibility of subpoenaing Farley. According to the senator, these hearings are part of the work on an important transportation bill, and Ford’s refusal to participate looks like indifference to the legislative process.

Ford’s Position and the Question of Fairness

Ford spokesperson Dave Tovar stated on behalf of the company that Ford remains open to dialogue with leaders like Senator Cruz on issues concerning the company, its employees, and the industry as a whole.

However, the company insists on equal conditions for all. Ford is willing to testify at hearings dedicated to vehicle affordability, but only if other major players, such as Tesla, are also represented by their top executives. Currently, it is expected that instead of Elon Musk, Tesla will be represented by senior engineering executive Lars Moravy. This position is supported by General Motors CEO Mary Barra, who hinted she would appear only if everyone participates.

Why is it Okay Not to Call Musk?

Ted Cruz explained why Elon Musk’s absence from the hearings is acceptable. In his opinion, Musk’s presence would turn the event into a question about the Dogecoin cryptocurrency and divert attention from the main topic — vehicle affordability for Americans. Legislators, however, want to discuss precisely prices, environmental standards, fuel economy standards, and the impact of regulation on the cost of cars at dealerships.

This story vividly illustrates how technical and economic hearings in Congress can escalate into political confrontation with elements of public shaming. The conflict surrounding the participation of auto giant executives points to a deeper problem: finding a balance between business accountability to legislators and companies’ strategic communication decisions. The issue of new car affordability remains extremely relevant for millions of American families, and this discussion, despite the political backdrop, could set the direction for future regulatory decisions in the automotive industry.
