Cupra Raval Competes with Alpine A290 and Features Innovative Differential

New Electric Supermini Cupra Raval Enters the Market

The Spanish sports brand of the Volkswagen Group, Cupra, has introduced its smallest electric car — the Raval. This model, which is a “sister” to the upcoming VW ID. Polo and Skoda Epiq, will appear on European roads in 2026. Its main goal is to compete with the popular Renault 5.

The car, just over 4 meters long, belongs to the supermini class but impresses with its dimensions: a 2600 mm wheelbase and a spacious 441-liter trunk. Its wider and lower stance gives it a sporty, “planted” look.

Technical Features and Platform

The Raval is built on Volkswagen Group’s new modular MEB+ platform, which it will share with the ID. Polo and Epiq. This architecture, optimized for smaller and more affordable electric vehicles, features front-wheel drive.

Wide Range of Powertrains

Buyers are offered several battery and motor options:

Sporty VZ Version

For speed enthusiasts, there is a “hot” VZ version. It develops 226 hp, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and could become a competitor for the Alpine A290 and the upcoming VW ID. Polo GTI. The range of this version is about 400 km.

The Raval’s chassis is 15 mm lower and 10 mm wider than the base MEB+ setup for the ID. Polo. The VZ version received adaptive dampers, progressive steering, and an electronic locking differential.

Interior and Equipment

The cabin is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.9-inch multimedia system. Unlike the ID. Polo, the Raval has a minimum of physical buttons, and climate control is managed via Volkswagen’s interface touch sliders. Physical switches are retained only on the steering wheel.

The top Raval VZ Extreme version received carbon bucket seats with 3D knit upholstery, 19-inch Sulfur Green wheels, and matte body paint.

Price and Competition

The starting price of the Cupra Raval is expected to be around €26,000. In Great Britain, the model will cost approximately £23,000. Thus, the car enters into direct competition with the Renault 5 for the right to be the main affordable electric supermini on the market.

The arrival of the Cupra Raval marks a new stage in the battle for the mass electric vehicle market. Manufacturers are focusing not only on technical characteristics but also on creating a bright image and driver engagement even in small city models. The success of the Raval will depend not only on its dynamics and range but also on how successfully it has managed to address the traditional “pains” of VW’s electric platforms — the multimedia interface and cabin space organization. Competition with the Renault 5, which has already won public favor with its design, will be extremely fierce.
