If you have a Lucid vehicle equipped with optional all-weather floor mats, you should be prepared for some unexpected news. The car manufacturer is issuing an important warning because there is a possibility that these mats could shift out of place and obstruct the accelerator pedal, increasing the risk of an accident.
This all echoes a case from over a decade ago when improperly secured mats were blamed for a series of unintended acceleration incidents.
According to reports, in their Model -00, the all-weather mats are only secured in place by small protrusions underneath, rather than proper fastenings. This means they are prone to shifting forward, which could lead to unintended acceleration. This not only puts passengers in a Lucid at risk but also poses a threat to other road users.
How did this all happen?
Lucid first learned of the potential issue in August last year when a retailer driving an Air with the mats across Europe suspected that the mat had shifted forward and caused the accelerator pedal to stick. Later, the company became aware of 13 other cases of mats shifting, but there were no reports that they obstructed the pedal.
However, on February 27, 2025, a US customer reported a problem: during acceleration, the gas pedal did not return to its usual position after being released. Lucid determined that the possibility of the mat shifting and interfering with pedal operation posed an unreasonable safety risk.
Therefore, the company halted the sale of problematic all-weather mats and now only offers mats with holes for attachment to the clips in the carpeting, which are typically found in most vehicles.
Car owners with the specified mats have been instructed to remove them and will receive a full refund for their purchase. If you are unsure whether your mats are defective or belong to the new secured type, simply bring your vehicle for a free inspection at a Lucid service center.
