Chinese Toyota RAV4s Have Significantly Larger Screen and Much Lower Price Compared to Yours

Two Localized Toyota SUVs for the Chinese Market

Toyota has introduced two adapted versions of its popular SUV for the Chinese market, produced by joint ventures: the FAW RAV4 and the GAC Wildlander. Both models have unique trim levels, powertrain options, and prices, making them somewhat distinct and significantly more affordable than their global counterparts.

Exterior and Design

The GAC Toyota Wildlander follows the cleaner look of the international RAV4 with a body-colored grille and hammer-shaped headlights. In contrast, the FAW-Toyota RAV4 has a more aggressive style, borrowed from the Woodland and Adventure trims, but without roof rails. Neither version offers a GR Sport option, so performance enthusiasts will have to look at other models.

Dimensions and Wheels

Both SUVs are based on 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels, with minor differences in the bumpers creating a variation in overall length. The Wildlander is 4600 mm long, while the RAV4 is 4620 mm.

Interior and Technology

The biggest difference from global models is the technological equipment. A floating 15.6-inch touchscreen with software for China is paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and an optional 26.4-inch head-up display. For comparison, global versions, including the American one, are limited to 10.5 or 12.9-inch screens and a 12.3-inch instrument panel.

Trim Levels and Features

GAC-Toyota has already published full specifications for the Wildlander, and FAW-Toyota is expected to follow soon with details for the RAV4. Key options include a panoramic sunroof, semi-aniline leather seats with heating and ventilation, a multi-function armrest, dual-zone climate control, 64-color ambient lighting, facial recognition, voice control, and a 749-liter luggage compartment.

Platform and Powertrains

Both models are built on the updated TNGA-K platform. The most significant difference from the global RAV4 lineup is the availability of a traditional non-electrified option for Chinese buyers. Engines include a 2.0-liter gasoline unit producing 169 hp, as well as two hybrids: a 2.0-liter with 193 hp and a 2.5-liter with E-Four all-wheel drive producing 236 hp. A plug-in hybrid is not yet available, but the situation may change later.

Pricing Policy and Comparison

The GAC-Toyota Wildlander costs from ¥169,800 to ¥230,800, which is approximately $23,900–$32,500. For comparison, the hybrid RAV4 in the US starts at $31,900, and in Australia at AU$45,990. The updated RAV4 lineup has not yet gone on sale in Japan or Europe.

Price is a key factor in the competitive Chinese market, where Toyota is trying to maintain leadership by offering localized products. The lack of plug-in hybrids could be a temporary drawback, given the growing demand for electric vehicles in the region. A similar strategy allows the company to flexibly respond to local preferences without losing global production unification.
