Main characteristics of the new SUV
Although many Chinese brands are producing truly interesting cars today, Hongqi is usually not the first name that comes to mind. This is despite its status as the country’s most prestigious domestic brand, the same one that once carried China’s political elite, including Chairman Mao. Their latest development is the G919 — an angular SUV with a huge radiator grille that does not add to its attractiveness.
Presentation and design
This rugged SUV was introduced at the recent Beijing Auto Show, and now a new series of images has emerged. More and more Chinese brands are entering the SUV segment, responding to high demand, and Hongqi decided it was time to join them. The styling leaves much to be desired, but the G919 still has several advantages.
Technical details and dimensions
Measuring 202.1 inches (5,135 mm) in length, 80.7 inches (2,050 mm) in width, and 76.7 inches (1,950 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 114.1 inches (2,900 mm), the G919 uses a traditional body-on-frame construction, which is an important element for any good off-road SUV. Hongqi has also equipped the model with mechanical differential locks both front and rear, along with sophisticated air suspension. And, like the Mercedes G-Class it clearly aims at, there is also a center differential lock.
Supercar powertrain
Next comes the powertrain. The G919 will be built as an EREV, combining a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with four electric motors for a total output of 831 hp (620 kW) and 973 lb-ft (1,320 Nm) of torque. The battery pack size remains unknown, but it is reported to offer an electric-only range of 174 miles (280 km) and a combined range of 839 miles (1,350 km).
Obviously, no one needs such an extreme amount of power in an SUV, but it is nice to have it. Additionally, since the G919 has an electric motor on each wheel, it provides precise torque vectoring to maintain traction in all conditions. It can also accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in an impressive 4.5 seconds.
Price and sales launch
The price has not been confirmed yet. What we do know is that the G919 is expected to go on sale in the coming months.
The emergence of such a powerful and technologically advanced SUV from Hongqi signals the serious intentions of the Chinese auto industry to compete in the highest market segments. The combination of a traditional body-on-frame construction with a modern hybrid powertrain and luxurious features makes the G919 a direct competitor to models such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and other premium SUVs. It remains to be seen whether a brand known for its history of state limousines can win over buyers in this new segment.
