Chery iCar SUV: A Budget Version of the Land Rover Defender
Chinese automaker Chery is preparing to launch a new off-roader under the iCar brand, which looks very similar to the Land Rover Defender. However, unlike the British vehicle, this model will be significantly more affordable in price – it is expected to cost from $27,600 to $34,500.
According to reports, the iCar SUV will receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a gasoline engine with electric motors. Although the car’s design resembles the Defender, it has some differences, such as larger side windows and a different placement of the stop light.
Technical Features and Design
A prototype, photographed during testing in China, shows similarities to the Defender in the front end, including the headlights and radiator grille. The side panels also feature characteristic black cladding and massive door handles. The rear is equipped with four square LED lights, and the third brake light is located where the spare wheel is usually mounted.
“The expected price range of $28,000–$34,000 makes it a budget option in the off-road vehicle market”
Full technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, but Chery’s lineup already includes a similar hybrid system used in the Exlantix ET crossover. It includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and two electric motors.
The price of the iCar SUV will be significantly lower than the original Defender, which starts at around $95,000 in China. Thus, the new model could become an attractive option for those looking for a stylish off-roader for more affordable money.
Despite the similarity to Land Rover, iCar has no relation to the British brand. The name is also not connected to Apple, although it is reminiscent of the company’s canceled electric car project. Instead, the Chinese manufacturer is betting on affordability and modern technology, offering an alternative to premium off-roaders.
