1998 Land Cruiser Receives Update After a Quarter of a Century

Although electric vehicles are gaining popularity, many car enthusiasts continue to modernize old models. A prime example is the restored 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado J90, which was transformed into a modern version based on the J150.

The bodywork required a professional approach. Instead of simple overlays, the masters completely replaced the body, glazing, and lighting with parts from the 2022 Prado, creating a plausible copy.

The new elements were taken from the second restyling of the J150, which was produced until 2023. Thus, the J90 visually jumped two generations forward, ending up 24 years ahead.

It is impressive that the dimensions of the models differ significantly: the J150 is 150 mm longer, 65 mm wider, and has a 115 mm longer wheelbase. However, the difference is almost imperceptible to the eye – only a specialist can detect it.

After extensive welding work, the interior was fitted with a dashboard, steering wheel, and center console from the J150, as well as new upholstery and door panels. A multimedia screen was added for a modern touch.

The original J90 engine remained under the hood. Although it is not as spectacular as the updated exterior, it reliably performs its function.

This unique project was created by the Keng Car Modify workshop from Laos, which specializes in repairing accident-damaged cars and individual modifications. This same team has previously surprised with other unusual tuning projects.

The cost of the external changes amounted to 390,000 baht (approximately $11,700), which is fully justified by the volume of work. The interior update cost from 45,000 to 145,000 baht ($1,400–4,400) depending on the configuration.
