Return of a Legend: Freelander Becomes a Standalone Electric Brand
The Freelander name is making an unexpected return to the automotive scene, but in a completely different capacity. The joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and the Chinese company Chery has confirmed that the new Freelander will debut on March 31st. This time, this badge will not belong to Land Rover but will become a standalone brand focused on electric vehicles, without traditional ties to its former owner.
The first official teaser focuses on rectangular headlights with pixel LED graphics. A vertical front end and hints of flared wheel arches combined with a gray plastic front bumper skid plate are also visible.
Design Heritage and Modern Trends
The vertical lines at the front seem to pay homage to the original design. The first Land Rover Freelander appeared in 1997, followed by a second generation in 2006, which was sold until 2015 when it was finally discontinued in favor of the Discovery Sport.
Overall, the new model borrows heavily from the Land Rover Defender’s design book, similar to the growing number of off-roaders coming out of China. However, since the design was developed by JLR’s studio in the UK, this model has legitimate rights to such an appearance.
Technical Features and Platform
Previously circulated spy photos have already revealed much about the Freelander’s stature, showing a boxy silhouette that fully adheres to off-road vehicle canons. The model is expected to have a three-row cabin layout, with an overall length exceeding 5100 mm, firmly placing it in the large family car category.
Under the hood, the off-roader will likely use Chery’s modular architecture. This platform is designed to support both fully electric powertrains and range-extender hybrids, and also provides the capability for ultra-fast charging.

Production and Global Ambitions
Production of the new model will be concentrated at the CJLR plant in Changshu, China. An investment program worth 3 billion yuan is currently underway at this facility, as the plant transitions from producing outdated Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models to preparing for the launch of the future Freelander lineup.
The Chinese joint venture has also begun expanding its staff, recently posting on social media a poster with over 30 open positions at its offices in Shanghai and Suzhou. This recruitment confirms that JLR and Chery are building an entirely new corporate infrastructure. Although the new brand will initially launch in China, global expansion is planned for the future.
This rebranding of Freelander into a standalone marque demonstrates the dynamic transformation of the automotive industry, where traditional names are getting a new lease on life in the era of electric vehicles. The success of this strategy will depend on whether the new models can combine heritage and recognizability with technological innovation and market expectations, especially outside of China. The collaboration between Western design and Chinese manufacturing strength could become a powerful formula in the competitive electric off-roader market.
