Lexus may get its own version of the new sports coupe from Toyota GR

New Toyota Supra and a possible Lexus twin

The current generation Toyota Supra is completing its seven-year cycle, but the company has already confirmed work on the next version. Japanese sources report that the new model may be developed in parallel with a Lexus model, which will become part of the brand’s sports car lineup.

Lexus is looking for a replacement for the RC coupe and the flagship LC, which has been in production since 2017. An ideal solution could be a new two-door model with a 2+2 layout that combines dynamics and elegance.

Historical parallels

If the rumors are confirmed, this will not be the first case of a shared platform. In the 90s, the Supra A80 shared features with the Toyota Soarer and Lexus SC. Now there is a possibility of the return of the legendary SC index or the appearance of a completely new name.

The design of the Lexus version will likely differ from the Supra but will retain its sporty character. The use of styling elements from the brand’s concepts is expected, but with more refined proportions and premium finishing.

Technical features

The new Supra will likely receive a hybrid powertrain based on a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine from Toyota. The drive will be rear-wheel, and the transmission will be an eight- or ten-speed automatic. The Lexus version may have a similar technical basis but with an adapted suspension for a more comfortable ride.

Some sources mention the possibility of Mazda’s involvement, but this information remains unconfirmed. The premiere of the new Supra is expected in 2026-2027, with the Lexus version appearing shortly after.

The previous break between Supra generations lasted 17 years, but this time the wait will be significantly shorter. Toyota’s hybrid system technologies allow for the creation of a powerful yet efficient sports car that meets modern requirements.
