Lexus has once again updated its compact sports sedan

Lexus IS Update: Third Facelift Instead of a New Generation

Lexus has presented the third facelift of the compact IS sedan, extending the model’s life cycle. The car received a sharper front end, a more modern interior, and an updated chassis tune. The lineup includes IS 300h and IS 350 versions, likely with retained powertrains.

Lexus’s Unexpected Move

Instead of the expected new generation IS, the company decided to update the current model before its market launch in early 2026. The sedan received a redesigned front section, a completely updated interior, as well as improvements in handling and safety.

The third-generation IS first appeared back in 2013, with a minor update in 2017 and a more serious one in 2020. Instead of replacing the model, Lexus opted for a third facelift, which may be related to a change in the brand’s electrification strategy.

Exterior Changes: New Face and Details

The most noticeable change to the exterior was the updated radiator grille. Its upper part has slightly decreased and is combined with the retained LED headlights, and the Lexus logo is now placed below the hood line. The bumper was also updated, changing its contours.

The rest of the body remained virtually unchanged. Among other updates are new 19-inch alloy wheels, a larger rear spoiler, and the Lexus script on the rear doors. The car shown in the photo is the F Sport version, so the effect of the facelift on the base version is not yet known. The color palette includes eight shades, including Neutrino Gray, as well as optional red brake calipers.

Interior: Modern Technologies and Materials

The interior features an updated instrument panel, center console, and door cards. The new digital panel includes two 12.3-inch displays, with the multimedia screen positioned lower and being touch-sensitive. This makes the inconvenient touchpad of the previous version redundant.

The model also received new climate control switches, retaining the volume knob on the center tunnel and the buttons on the steering wheel. Furthermore, the CD player and analog clock were removed. The interior is adorned with accents of natural bamboo and a new interior color, Prominence.

Safety and Updated Chassis

The equipment is supplemented by the Lexus Safety System +, which includes new and improved ADAS, allowing for highway driving without driver input.

Lexus engineers have also updated the IS chassis. A new electric power steering with a variable gear ratio is installed, improving response, and the suspension received a linear solenoid-type AVS, which ensures smooth damping and quick reaction.

Powertrains: Familiar Options

At the start of sales, only the IS 300h and IS 350 will be offered. Detailed specifications have not yet been released, but no significant changes compared to the existing setups are expected. The current IS 300h is equipped with a hybrid 2.5-liter engine producing 217 hp, while the more powerful IS 350 has a 3.5-liter V6 with 314 hp.

The IS 500 version with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 will likely be discontinued, as the Japanese Climax Edition and the American Ultimate Edition became its swan song.

Sales Plans and Model History

The updated Lexus IS will go on sale in various markets, although details have not yet been disclosed. The first deliveries are expected in early 2026. Since the debut of the original model in 1999, the company has sold approximately 1.3 million units of the IS in 40 countries and regions.

Lexus’s decision for a third facelift instead of a full-fledged new generation may indicate a shift in priorities for model development, especially in the context of the global transition to electric vehicles. It also underscores that traditional sedans with internal combustion engines continue to have their audience, even in the face of growing popularity of SUVs and electric cars.
