Lucid Air to Receive Update for Hands-Free Driving
The Lucid Air electric car, already considered one of the best on the market, will receive an update for its driver assistance system. Starting July 30, owners of the model with the $2,500 DreamDrive Pro package will be able to use hands-free driving and automatic lane changing features on compatible highways in the USA. The update will later become available for the Gravity crossover as well.
The system uses lidar, radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to ensure safety. Although the company did not specify which exact roads are suitable for this function, it will work on divided highways. Similar technologies are already implemented in vehicles from other manufacturers such as Ford, GM, and Mercedes-Benz.
“Adding these features to DreamDrive Pro opens a window into the future that Lucid is building thanks to the capabilities of our software-defined vehicles,” stated Vice President of ADAS and AD Kai Stepper.
The price of the DreamDrive Pro package looks attractive compared to analogues, for example, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, which costs over $8,000. The update will only be available for cars with DreamDrive Pro installed, which may cause regret for those who declined this option.
The implementation of such features highlights the trend towards the autonomization of electric vehicles, while simultaneously raising questions about safety and regulation. Lucid demonstrates that their approach to software development allows for the continuous improvement of vehicle capabilities through wireless updates. This is especially important for premium models, where customer expectations regarding technology are constantly growing.
