The Future of Honda: New Models, But Not Just Electric Cars

Honda Unveils Development Plan Through 2035

Honda has published its development strategy for the coming years, which includes the release of new models with hybrid and electric powertrains. The main points of the plan are:

Model Lineup Updates

The first new product will be the Honda Prelude, which will debut in North America, Europe, and Japan later this year. This model will feature a hybrid powertrain and a special “S+ Shift” mode that simulates gear shifting.

The Prelude update is expected around 2028, allowing the model to remain relevant in the market

Between 2027 and 2031, the company plans to release 13 new hybrids with an improved e:HEV system. These vehicles will feature better efficiency, performance, and safety systems.

Electrification Prospects

Despite reducing investments in electric vehicles from $69 to $48 billion, Honda continues developing new models. The first electric vehicle in the 0 series—the Saloon—will appear in 2026, followed by three electric crossovers in 2027-2028.

In China, the company is actively developing electric models through joint ventures with Dongfeng and GAC. However, it remains unclear whether these vehicles will be exported outside the country.

Although Honda has slowed its electric vehicle development, the company continues to invest in alternative technologies, including hydrogen. A new hydrogen model, now developed without GM’s involvement, is expected in 2027.

Changes in Honda’s strategy reflect current market realities, where demand for hybrids exceeds interest in fully electric models. However, the long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality remains unchanged. The company is preparing a series of updates for its key models, such as the CR-V, Pilot, and Accord, which will receive new generations in the coming years.
