Nearly Half of Toyota and Lexus Buyers Chose Electrified Vehicles, While Tacoma Set an Annual Sales Record

In 2025, Toyota and Lexus demonstrated significant success in the US market, selling over 2.5 million vehicles. This is an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year. The most important factor in this growth was electrification: nearly half of all vehicles sold by these brands had some form of electric powertrain.

Electrification as the Key to Success

A full 47 percent of Toyota and Lexus sales in the US now come from hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric models. Overall, sales of electrified vehicles for the two brands grew by 17.6 percent, reaching nearly 1.2 million units. The main challenge for the company is not finding buyers, but meeting the high demand due to supply chain issues.

The most successful were models already popular among Americans but which received a hybrid version. For example, Grand Highlander Hybrid sales soared by 165 percent, and Tacoma Hybrid sales increased by a full 223 percent. This helped the Toyota brand achieve its best year since 2017.

A Record for Tacoma and Changes in the Lineup

The Tacoma pickup set a personal record, with 274,638 units sold, which is 42.4 percent more than in 2024. This result significantly exceeds the model’s previous record.

However, not all hybrid models showed growth. RAV4 Hybrid sales fell by approximately 13 percent, partly due to the model’s update at the end of the year. Corolla Cross Hybrid lost 16 percent in sales, and the Venza Hybrid practically disappeared from the market due to the discontinuation of its production.

Toyota Crown Signia

The situation with the Crown model is interesting. Sales of the Crown crossover fell by over 37 percent, while the Crown Signia, which looks more like a classic SUV, doubled its sales. This clearly indicates that buyers prefer electrification in a body style resembling an SUV rather than a sedan.

Historic Success for Lexus

The Lexus brand also celebrated its best year in history, selling 370,260 vehicles, which is 7 percent more than the previous year. The trends are similar: the fully electric RZ lost 34 percent in sales, while the plug-in hybrid versions of the RX and TX showed growth of 38 and 123 percent, respectively.

Not all Lexus hybrids were successful. LS Hybrid sales fell by almost 60 percent, and not a single unit was sold in December, once again highlighting the declining interest in premium sedans. This is the final year of production for this model.

Detailed Sales Statistics

The tables below detail the results of Toyota and Lexus for 2025, breaking down sales by model and type of powertrain. The data shows overall growth and changes in demand structure, where electrified versions are playing an increasingly important role.

Toyota and Lexus Sales in 2025 (Key Summary):

These figures confirm that Toyota’s strategy, focused on hybrids and a variety of electrified options, has proven successful. Demand for more environmentally friendly cars is growing, but it is tightly linked to body type and practicality, as clearly seen in the success of SUVs and pickups compared to sedans. The brand’s future seems to lie precisely in combining familiar American form factors with new technologies, allowing it to maintain customer loyalty and attract new ones. The growth of models like the Grand Highlander Hybrid and Tacoma Hybrid indicates that the market is ready for change, as long as it does not contradict the core advantages of the vehicle.
