Rare Tuned Mercedes-AMG SL63 Lost Almost Half Its Value
Even the most exclusive cars from the famous German atelier Brabus do not always turn out to be good investments. A prime example of this is a rare 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63, which was modified by Brabus in a special series to honor the company’s founder. Despite its limited series and power, this car failed to sell at an auction in the USA, demonstrating a sharp drop in market value.
Exclusive Series Honoring the Founder
The modified SL63 is known as the Brabus 750 Bobo Buschmann Edition. This series was introduced in mid-2023 as a tribute to the founder of the tuning company. Production was limited to just 25 cars, making each one a collector’s item. The first owner of this particular example paid an impressive $415,000 for it, which is almost double the price of a standard SL63. It is this amount that clearly illustrates the scale of the lost value.
After appearing on the Bring a Trailer auction at the beginning of the month, bids only rose to $241,000, which did not meet the seller’s minimum reserve price. This happened despite the car having only 1,700 miles (2,735 km) on the odometer.
Expensive Exterior and Interior Modifications
The German tuner made numerous changes to the car’s appearance. These include carbon fiber parts such as the front splitter and rear diffuser. Also present are an illuminated logo on the radiator grille, eye-catching forged 21- and 22-inch wheels, and carbon-ceramic brakes.
The interior also underwent significant refinement. Black Nappa leather with a quilted stitch pattern was added, costing $59,000. Carbon fiber trim is present throughout the cabin, and illuminated sills add a visual accent. The cost of just these interior upgrades could rival the price of a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
The Heart of Power
The car’s engine received serious attention. Among the upgrades are new Brabus turbochargers and a reprogrammed control unit. This allowed the 4.0-liter V8 engine to develop 740 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque.
Market Reality for Tuned Cars
Exclusive cars from famous tuning ateliers often carry a significant price premium upon first purchase; however, the used car market tends to be much less forgiving. The failure of this SL63 at auction indicates that rarity alone does not always guarantee value retention over time. On the other hand, for used car buyers, such depreciation can turn a heavily modified roadster into a rather attractive proposition, where for significantly less money one can get a car with unique characteristics and history that has barely been driven.
