Mazda Reported Fixing a Steering Problem That Led to Accidents, However Drivers Claim the Malfunction Persists

Automaker Mazda has announced a recall of the 2024 model year CX-90 crossover due to a steering defect that drivers describe as “locking” or “sticky steering.”

The Problem with Modern Technologies

Modern cars, packed with technology, sometimes create new problems. Mazda CX-90 owners experienced this firsthand after a recall in early 2024 meant to fix the “sticky steering” issue.

Nearly two years later, it appears the problem may not be fully resolved. Some drivers report its recurrence, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation to verify the effectiveness of the implemented measures.

Reasons for the Initial Recall

The initial recall, numbered 24V022, aimed to address a sudden and unexpected change in steering wheel effort. Research at the time revealed that the worm gear in the steering mechanism could heat up to the point where the lubricant lost effectiveness, leading to non-linear and unstable steering operation.

The proposed fix involved reapplying lubricant and updating the software, which was supposed to detect the problem before it occurred. Theoretically, this combination should have completely resolved the issue.

However, NHTSA continues to receive reports of steering instability from owners who have already undergone the recall procedure. According to a new official inquiry, federal regulators are investigating whether the actions taken by Mazda truly solved the problem.

New Complaints About an Old Problem

The Office of Defects Investigation reports receiving 26 consumer complaints, as well as several field reports, mentioning periodic and sudden increases in steering effort during normal driving.

NHTSA warns that any unexpected change in steering while driving can increase the risk of an accident, especially at high speeds or during evasive maneuvers.

Furthermore, the Office of Defects Investigation believes two accidents may be related to this issue. No injuries or fatalities have been reported due to it so far. The investigation covers 43,752 Mazda CX-90 vehicles of the 2024 model year sold in the USA. At this point, owners do not need to do anything. NHTSA has not issued any recommendations, nor has Mazda itself.

Next Steps

Currently, the conclusion of the Office of Defects Investigation regarding the effectiveness of the first recall is awaited. If it is determined that the proposed measures were insufficient, Mazda will have to develop a revised repair procedure and announce a new recall.

This situation with the Mazda CX-90 highlights the complexity of modern automotive manufacturing, where software and mechanical components closely interact. Even after an official fix, the problem can return, requiring constant monitoring from both the manufacturer and regulators. For owners, this means the need to be attentive to the car’s behavior and promptly respond to any strange symptoms related to steering, as safety remains the most important aspect. Further developments will show whether Mazda can finally resolve this technical challenge and restore customer trust.
