Mazda Prepares New Sports Cars
Mazda, which once became famous for models like the RX-7 and the original Miata, has focused on other segments in recent years. However, the situation may change. The production version of the Iconic SP concept, equipped with a rotary engine, could be released as early as 2026. This model will become the spiritual successor to the legendary RX-7.
Additionally, it is expected to be sold in parallel with the new generation MX-5, although the latter will appear a bit later.
Technical Details
The Iconic SP concept has a length of 4,180 mm, making it larger than the current MX-5 but more compact than some other sports cars. The main feature will be a hybrid powertrain with a rotary engine, which will produce about 365 horsepower.
“You can expect the Iconic SP to be a worthy successor to the RX-7,” stated Mazda’s technical director.
The name of the new model is not yet determined, but it is known that it will not be called Cosmo. Engineers are also working on an improved version of the rotary engine that will comply with US environmental standards.
The Future of the MX-5
A new generation of the MX-5 is under development, but its release will not happen before 2027. The design will share common features with the Iconic SP but will remain compact and affordable. Unlike the rotary sports car, the MX-5 will retain a classic gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive.
Mazda traditionally focuses on lightness and handling, so the next MX-5 will likely continue this philosophy. It is worth noting that the company plans to produce both models in parallel so that they complement each other, rather than compete.
