Mazda updated the CX-5: is it worth expecting a replacement for the CX-50?
When Mazda presented the CX-50 in 2021, many assumed it would replace the CX-5. However, the situation has now become more complicated: the updated CX-5 has become larger, received a hybrid version, and will likely increase in price, making it even closer to the CX-50.
Why did Mazda decide to develop both models?
Company representatives explain this by saying the market allows it. Vice President of Strategic Planning at Mazda North America, Stephan Maisterfeld, stated:
We believe in the coexistence of these two models because this is the largest segment in the industry.
According to him, the CX-5 is oriented towards urban customers, while the CX-50 appeals to those seeking adventure.
However, the question of pricing policy remains open. Since the CX-5 is imported from Japan, it may be subject to a customs duty of 27.5%, which could affect the final cost. Despite this, the company promises only a slight price increase.
Currently, the price difference between the CX-5 and the US-made CX-50 is only $1730. The future will show whether these two similar models can continue to compete in the market, especially considering the growing popularity of electric vehicles and changes in consumer demand. The manufacturer seems to be betting on different target audiences, but will this strategy justify itself in the long term?
