Mercedes AMG has introduced unique technology for its new electric car
The new Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept hides one unexpected feature – speakers embedded in the headlights. Initially, this detail remained unnoticed against the backdrop of other innovations, such as aerodynamic wheels and a digital display. However, they play a key role in creating a unique sound accompaniment.
The speakers use the headlight housing as a resonator to reproduce low frequencies similar to the roar of a classic V8. For passengers, the sound is delivered through the cabin’s acoustic system, while the external speakers are intended for pedestrians. This not only adds emotion but also serves a safety function, as electric cars must be audible on the road.
EVs are required by law to make some external noise to warn pedestrians of their presence, and giving the XX a moody growl seems like a more appropriate way of doing that in a 1,341 hp EV than some random bings and bongs.
Technical Specifications and Prospects
The concept is equipped with three Yasa motors and a 114 kWh battery, which can theoretically charge at a power of over 850 kW. This will add 400 km (249 miles) of range in just 5 minutes. For now, such fast charging stations are only available in China, but Mercedes expects them to become standard in the future.
This model will become a competitor to the Porsche Taycan and is likely to go into serial production next year. The imitation of engine sound is not just entertainment, but a thoughtful step that combines the emotions of classic cars with the advantages of electric drive. This technology could become a trend among premium brands trying to preserve the ‘character’ of their cars in the era of electrification.
