Mercedes-AMG Abandons Hybrid Four-Cylinder Engine
Mercedes-AMG admits that their experiment with the hybrid four-cylinder M139 PHEV engine has failed. A source within the company reported that this unit, used in the C63 model, will be replaced with hybrid six-cylinder or new V8 engines. The version with the 2.0-liter engine producing 671 hp received particular criticism for its “soulless” character and heavy weight.
Despite this powertrain outperforming the previous V8 in terms of power, it did not find widespread demand among buyers. Additional reasons for the abandonment were the high costs of adapting the engine to future Euro-7 standards, as well as the limited electric range (less than 16 km).
What to Expect from AMG in the Future?
The company is currently considering the possibility of using the 3.0-liter hybrid six-cylinder engine from the E53 in the C63, although its power (603 hp) is somewhat lower than the current figure. However, the greatest hopes are associated with the new V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, which is under development. It could be installed in the next generation of the C63, but not before the late 2020s.
These changes reflect a general trend in the automotive industry: the search for a balance between performance, environmental friendliness, and market demand. While hybrid technologies remain an important part of AMG’s strategy, the company seems to be betting on engines more traditional for its models, but with modern refinements.
