A rare 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 6.0 AMG Hammer has been put up for auction by RM Sotheby’s, which experts are already calling one of the most expensive representatives of the W124 family in history. The car’s estimated value is between $750,000 and $900,000, or approximately 31.1 to 37.4 million UAH. This is reported by “RM Sotheby’s”.
It concerns the legendary coupe nicknamed the Galdi Coupe, which became one of the cars that brought AMG worldwide fame even before the company became part of Mercedes-Benz.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 6.0 AMG Hammer is one of three such coupes
This car belongs to an extremely limited series. In the USA, the AMG North America division built only three Hammer coupes with a 6.0-liter V8 engine.
Features of this specific example:
- one of three AMG Hammer Coupe 6.0;
- the only one with the signature “ducktail” spoiler from AMG North America;
- original 32-valve AMG engine;
- factory chassis and transmission modifications;
- mileage under 58,000 km.
The car received a specially modified 6.0-liter V8 producing 385 hp, Bilstein sports suspension, reinforced brakes, and a limited-slip differential.
How much the AMG Hammer cost new
The first owner of the coupe was American financier Joseph Galdi II, who ordered the car through Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories.
In 1988, the cost of this Mercedes-AMG was $192,000. At that time, it was almost twice as expensive as a new Ferrari Testarossa or Lamborghini Countach.
The AMG Hammer sedan in its day became famous for its ability to accelerate to speeds unattainable by most supercars of that period, while remaining a comfortable car for daily use.
The example put up for auction has retained its original powertrain and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from AMG North America co-founder Richard Buxbaum. In recent years, over $160,000 has been invested in the car’s technical maintenance and reliability enhancement.
If RM Sotheby’s forecast proves correct, this Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 6.0 AMG Hammer could set a new price record among W124 models ever sold at public auction.
