Mercedes-Benz presents updated version of SL with unique design solutions

Expected model update

The Mercedes-AMG SL was introduced in the fall of 2021, which means it’s time for its facelift. The company seems to agree with this, as spy photos captured a prototype undergoing cold climate testing.

The car has a heavily camouflaged front end, but the new headlights with the star effect characteristic of modern Mercedes are noticeable. This design has become a recognizable, albeit somewhat flashy, brand feature.

So far, few details are visible on the front bumper, but previous spy shots indicated a larger radiator grille and a new bumper design. An updated splitter and changes to the air intake design are also expected.

Exterior changes

The rest of the body seems to remain unchanged, but this particular prototype is a mix of different trim levels. Specifically, the rear bumper and exhaust system are borrowed from the luxurious Maybach variant. However, it is unlikely to be a true Maybach model, as it lacks the hood ornament and special badges on the front fenders.

This is not very surprising, as we are seeing an early prototype. The production version can be expected to have additional changes, which will likely include a new rear bumper and rear lights also with a star effect.

Interior updates

Photographers only got a glimpse inside, but it is visible that the interior is covered with camouflage. This indicates some interior updates, although their scale is currently unknown.

The car may follow in the footsteps of the updated S-Class and replace the portrait multimedia system with a landscape MBUX Hyperscreen. Even if the changes are not extensive, an updated infotainment system with an AI-based operating system can be expected.

Powertrains

The engine lineup will most likely remain the same, but some updates for improved performance and efficiency are possible. While final figures are unknown, the current SL model offers a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 416 hp and 500 Nm of torque.

The company also offers several versions of the bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8, as well as a high-performance plug-in hybrid version. The latter uses the mentioned V8 engine together with an electric motor on the rear axle and a 6.1 kWh battery. This combination delivers a combined output of 805 hp and 1418 Nm of torque.

It is also worth noting the new V8 M177 Evo engine with a flat-plane crankshaft, whose debut is expected in the updated S580 mild-hybrid later this month. In the sedan, this engine develops 530 hp and has lower emissions. If it appears on the SL, it could give the updated model additional advantages.

The luxury roadster market remains niche, but extremely important for brand image. The update of the Mercedes-AMG SL, especially in terms of technology and lighting design, aligns with the general trend of electrification and increased digital interaction with the driver. Competition from models like the Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Aston Martin Vantage Roadster forces the German manufacturer to constantly seek new ways to stand out while preserving the classic sports DNA of the SL model.
