Mercedes G-Class in electric version failed so badly that it could change the brand’s future

Electric Mercedes G-Class did not find demand

Mercedes-Benz placed a strong emphasis on electrifying the iconic G-Class, but buyers have not shown significant interest in this model. According to data from Germany, sales of the electric version are so low that the company is considering a return to internal combustion engines for the future compact version of the G-Class.

One Mercedes representative stated:

“The car is lying at dealerships like lead; it’s a complete failure”

. Another source added that production of the electric G-Class was already limited. As of April 2024, only 1,450 units were sold in Europe, 61 in South Korea, and just 58 in China. In the U.S., according to some reports, not a single car was sold.

Traditional G-Class remains the leader

While the electric version is “stuck,” the ICE model continues to enjoy demand. Its sales exceed those of the electric version by seven times. This is surprising, as they are almost identical in appearance. However, the G-Class EQ has significant drawbacks: limited space, low towing capacity, and a modest range—only 385 km according to the EPA standard.

Prestigious buyers still prefer traditional engines over electric ones. Even though the latest G550 version lost the V8 in favor of an inline six-cylinder engine. Mercedes has already stated that it will continue developing both electric and conventional technologies. Now, the company may reconsider its plans for the compact G-Class, adapting it for a hybrid powertrain.

Demand for electric vehicles in the premium segment remains unstable, and even legendary models like the G-Class do not always find their fans in the new format. Perhaps Mercedes will have to find a balance between innovation and tradition to meet customer expectations.
