The Mercedes G-Class Has Become Too Big and Expensive, So the New ‘Little G’ Aims to Fix That

The automotive world is preparing for the arrival of a new compact off-roader from Mercedes-Benz, which has already received the unofficial nicknames ‘Little G’, ‘mini G’, or ‘baby G’. This model is set to become a direct competitor to the upcoming compact Land Rover Defender.

Key Features of the Future Newcomer

The popularity of the iconic G-Class continues to grow, and Mercedes has decided to expand the family by offering a more affordable and compact alternative with the same characteristic ‘boxy’ design.

Design and Exterior

Despite the heavy camouflage on test prototypes, the general body contours do not hide its kinship with the large G-Wagen. The model looks like a version of the original shrunk by approximately 30%, with slightly softened edges. The recognizable round headlights with turn signal rings, massive fenders, and a very flat hood remain.

Test shots also confirm the presence of G-Class characteristic details, such as the side-hinged rear door and the spare wheel housing on the rear panel. On the electric version, this housing will likely be used for storing charging cables.

Technical Implementation and Platform

Former Mercedes technical director Markus Schäfer confirmed that the ‘Little G’ will receive its own miniature ladder frame. This promises suspension characteristics and off-road capabilities close to those of the large model. The model will debut exclusively with electric drive, borrowing technologies from other brand EVs, such as the electric GLA and GLC. Exact battery and motor specifications have not been disclosed yet.

The company emphasizes that a hybrid scheme with a range-extender engine is not planned for this model. As for ICE versions, Mercedes neither confirms nor denies their development, leaving itself the possibility to respond to market demand.

The appearance of the compact G-Class is a logical step for Mercedes-Benz, which is trying to capitalize on the incredible success of the iconic model and attract a new audience. It is also a response to the intensification of competitors in the compact off-roader segment. The success of such a model will depend not only on preserving the visual DNA but also on whether engineers can convey in a smaller format those unique driving sensations and the status appeal for which the large ‘Geländewagen’ is loved. The focus on the electric version from the very beginning indicates the brand’s strategic course, but the readiness to consider traditional engines shows a pragmatic approach to the global market with different infrastructure realities.
