New compact Mercedes G-Class
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new compact version of the iconic off-road vehicle G-Class, named Mini G. This model retains the characteristic cubic design but is built on a completely new platform specifically designed for reliable use.
Unique platform and design
Mercedes has been developing this model for a long time, and at the Munich Motor Show, company executives Ola Kallenius and Markus Schaefer revealed key details. The Mini G platform is described as a “miniature frame” with suspension and wheel sizes typical of frame models but with some differences from the full-size G-Class.
Markus Schaefer noted: “Over time, I increasingly realized that everything had to be unique — the upper body and every detail. Even the door handles cannot be taken from the existing portfolio because the G-Class has such unique elements.”
He also added that the company spent a lot of time fine-tuning the car, developing unique components to ensure both an attractive appearance and high functionality.
Preserving the classic style
Ola Kallenius announced that test samples of the new Mini G will soon appear on the roads. In the teaser image, it is visible that the compact model will have almost identical rear lights and a spare wheel on the rear door, just like its larger sibling.
Gorden Wagener, head of Mercedes design, emphasized: “We will add a bit more sharpness and youthful graphics, but mainly we will preserve the G-Class style. This is a modern G — even a bit more modern than the large model.”
Electric drive
Although the Mini G is being developed following all the principles of the G-Class, there will be a significant difference under the hood. According to reports, the model will come out exclusively as an electric car, without options with internal combustion engines. This sets it apart from the full-size G-Class, which offers both types of powertrains.
The popularity of compact off-road vehicles is growing, and Mercedes seems to aim to establish itself in this segment by offering a model that combines tradition and innovation. This step also reflects the general trend towards electrification in the automotive industry, especially among premium brands.
