Mercedes has a plan to bring back the S-Class coupe, based on one of the brand’s most radical designs

The Future of Mercedes-Benz: Will the S-Class Coupe Return?

Mercedes-Benz recently updated its flagship S-Class sedan, but attention is already focused on what comes next. The next generation of the car is expected closer to the end of the decade, but this hasn’t stopped designers from creating interesting concept renders of the future model. Particularly intriguing are the ideas borrowed from one of the brand’s most experimental concepts.

Key points to know:

Inspiration from the Concept

Mercedes-Benz is expected to draw inspiration for the design of the new model precisely from the Vision Iconic concept. Speculative illustrations show how this direction could be implemented in a coupe form. It looks very attractive. If the brand ever returns to the two-door S-Class formula, such an approach seems quite dramatic and appropriate.

Mercedes discontinued production of the previous generation S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet in 2020, having produced them since 2014. When the model was on sale, it was one of the brand’s most attractive and impressive models, although it did not sell in sufficient numbers to justify its replacement.

Designer’s Interpretation

The latest interpretation belongs to designer Nikita Chuiko from Kolesa magazine. It imagines a new S-Class Coupe that adheres to the proportions of the old car but layers on details from the Vision Iconic concept. The overall shape looks familiar, although the details strongly lean towards Mercedes’ modern design language. At the front, this means thin, expressive headlights with star-shaped LED daytime running lights—a motif now spreading to most of the brand’s models.

Elegance or Exaggeration?

Like the Vision Iconic, this car is also depicted with an absolutely enormous radiator grille, adapted for series production to look more like the one on the GLC EQ, but on an even larger scale. The question remains whether a two-door coupe can handle such a grille as well as an SUV. If Mercedes does revive the S-Class Coupe, there is hope they will opt for a slightly more refined design.

Otherwise, the design looks more balanced. The side view is clean, with long, flowing doors that keep the silhouette from looking overloaded. The rear view is neat and modern, with thin LED taillights and a thin black diffuser that adds enough contrast without trying to be too aggressive.

Technical Future

Details about the next-generation S-Class remain limited, but it is expected to follow the same dual path as competitors like the BMW 7 Series, offering both internal combustion engines and fully electric versions. This means the EQS model will be discontinued after the current generation ends.

The question of the S-Class Coupe’s return remains open. On one hand, there is a clear nostalgic and emotional demand for such large luxury coupes. On the other—the market niche for them has significantly narrowed in favor of SUVs and electric vehicles. Mercedes’ decision to offer one platform for different types of powertrains could be the key to the economic viability of such a model. Success will depend not only on impressive concept-inspired design but also on how successfully it manages to combine the traditional luxury of the S-Class with the efficiency and technology requirements of the new decade.
