Mercedes is not going to abandon its premium electric sedan

Updated Mercedes EQS during winter tests

Mercedes-Benz is preparing an updated version of its EQS electric sedan. The car was spotted during testing in low-temperature conditions. The facelifted model is expected to debut later this year and will receive not only external changes but also technical updates.

External changes and design

Despite the camouflage, the spotted prototypes reveal new front headlights with optional starlight signature lighting, which has become a brand hallmark. The rear taillights appear to remain the previous ones but may be updated for the production version. Minor adjustments to the design of the front and rear bumpers are also expected.

Technical updates and platform

The most significant change is expected to be the transition to a new 800-volt electric architecture. This will significantly reduce the battery charging time. Similar updates have recently been introduced by competitors such as Polestar and Volvo in their models.

Mercedes has been very reserved about the details of this car, but it is expected to transition to a new 800-volt electric architecture.

New engines and transmission

There are also rumors that the model will receive updated battery cell chemistry and new in-house developed electric motors, known under the codename eATS 2.0. Furthermore, the single-speed gearbox may be replaced with a new two-speed one, which should improve efficiency and dynamics.

Expected driving range

All these changes are expected to positively impact efficiency and driving range. It is too early to talk about specific figures, but for comparison, the current EQS 450 Plus version offers a range of approximately 628 kilometers according to the EPA standard. This is a good indicator; however, competitors, for example the Lucid Air, already offer over 800 kilometers on a single charge.

The presentation of the updated EQS will take place soon, and then we will learn all the details. This update is critically important for Mercedes, as the original EQS did not achieve the expected sales volumes. The automaker aims to strengthen its position in the premium electric vehicle market, where competition is growing every day. The success of the updated model could significantly influence the perception of the brand’s electric flagship and the overall electrification strategy.
