Mercedes under buyer pressure continues production of compact cars

Mercedes continues A-Class production until 2028

The popularity of the A-Class among European buyers forced Mercedes to reconsider plans for this model. Although production was previously scheduled to cease in 2026, the company has now decided to extend it until at least 2028. However, there will be no new generation A-Class – its place will eventually be taken by the CLA.

As stated by Mercedes production chief Jörg Burzer, this will be the “final cycle” for the A-Class. He emphasized that the model is particularly popular among European buyers, although no specific end date for production was given.

The model will remain relevant

The fourth generation A-Class (W177) appeared in 2018 and received an update in 2022. If production continues until 2028, the model will remain on the market for a full 10 years. To maintain competitiveness against the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3, another update is possible, although the A-Class is no longer sold in North America.

Simultaneously, Mercedes is preparing to update its compact model lineup. A-Class production will be moved from Germany to Hungary to free up capacity for new vehicles on the MMA platform. The first such model was the electric CLA, which has already debuted on the market. It will soon be joined by updated GLA, GLB and other compact models.

Despite growing competition, the A-Class continues to demonstrate decent sales in Europe – 27,772 units were sold in the first five months of 2024. This is 15% less than last year, but sufficient to continue production. In contrast, B-Class sales fell to 5,997 cars, confirming reduced demand for premium compact minivans.
