Mercedes plans to stimulate sales of $165,000 electric crossovers with a $10,000 discount

Electric Mercedes G-Class receives a substantial discount

Mercedes-Benz continues its electrification, even when it comes to such an iconic and traditionally “rugged” model as the G-Class. The launch of the fully electric G580 with EQ Technology has sparked mixed reactions, as one of the most famous off-roaders can now move in complete silence.

To boost interest in this model, the company has introduced a significant financial incentive. Previously, a $10,000 bonus was available only with a lease agreement, but now it can be obtained with any form of transaction—both with leasing and with an outright purchase of the vehicle.

Will the discount be enough for buyers?

The question is whether this discount will become a decisive argument for potential buyers. The base price of the G580 starts at $164,550, but finding a car at this price is practically impossible. Most offers on the market range from $180,000 to $190,000.

Even for the base price, a $10,000 discount, while not insignificant, amounts to only about 6% of the cost. For a typical G-Class buyer, who is accustomed to high prices, this amount may only be a minor financial relief, but is unlikely to be the primary motive for purchase.

Sales problems of the electric version

Overall, the G-Class lineup is performing well. Mercedes-Benz confirmed that last year, 49,700 G-Class vehicles were delivered worldwide, which is 23% more than the year before and is a new record for the model. However, the company did not disclose what portion of this number is the electric G580 and what portion is traditional models with internal combustion engines.

Earlier reports indicated that the G580 is not in high demand. As of April 2025, only 1,450 units were sold in Europe, and only 58 in China. It was also reported that Mercedes failed to sell a single electric vehicle in the USA, although there was no official confirmation of this information.

The introduction of a significant discount can be seen as an attempt to correct this very situation and make the expensive electric off-roader more attractive in key markets. The success of this strategy will show whether luxury buyers are ready to switch to electric in a segment where tradition and the character of the internal combustion engine have always been important values.
