Mercedes Discontinued the V8 for the C63, but the New CLE Model Could Restore Its Reputation

Mercedes-AMG has released provocative teaser images of the new CLE coupe, which belongs to the exclusive Mythos series. The car promises to be significantly more powerful than the standard versions with the 53 designation.

Key Expectations for the New Model

This is already the second model in the special Mythos series after the PureSpeed roadster based on the SL. It is expected that this CLE will be the first to receive the new high-performance flat-plane crank V8 engine from Mercedes-AMG.

Exterior and Design

In the four published photos, the prototype, covered in camouflage, showcases a completely new front bumper with an extremely wide lower radiator grille. It may feature active aerodynamic elements, similar to those used by Porsche on modern 911 models.

The signature Panamericana radiator grille remains unchanged, but the wheels look even more massive than those on the six-cylinder CLE 53. The rear of the body has been radically altered.

Instead of the four round exhaust pipes found on the 53 version, the new model has a quartet of square tailpipes, which traditionally indicates the presence of a V8 engine in AMG models. Furthermore, a massive racing-style spoiler has been installed on the rear edge of the trunk lid, replacing the small lip spoiler.

Drivetrain and Features

Through the rear window, a safety roll cage structure is visible inside, although it may be temporarily installed to protect test engineers. In one of the shots where the car is drifting on what is likely a frozen lake, it can be seen that snow is being kicked up only by the rear wheels. This may indicate a rear-wheel-drive layout.

There are no official hints yet from AMG regarding the type of drivetrain or engine details. However, throughout the year, reports have appeared stating that CLE prototypes spotted testing at the Nürburgring were equipped with a new 4.0-liter flat-plane crank V8 engine.

New Engine and Power

The first car to debut with this new engine family will be the upcoming S-Class, whose presentation is scheduled for January 29th. According to some publications, the CLE Mythos will develop over 650 horsepower (659 PS) and 800 Nm of torque. For comparison, the version for the luxury S-Class sedan will have about 537 hp and 745 Nm.

Regarding production volume and price – there is no precise data yet. However, since this CLE is part of the Mythos program, one can be sure it will be rare and incredibly expensive. The first car in the series, the PureSpeed roadster based on the SL with a distinctive Formula 1-style halo safety bar, was limited to 250 units and cost around a million dollars.

The appearance of a model like the CLE Mythos indicates Mercedes-AMG’s strategy of creating extremely exclusive and emotional cars outside the main model lineup. This is not just a powerful version, but rather a collector’s item that combines the latest engine technologies with unique design and limited availability. Such steps allow the brand to experiment at the top of the product line and maintain its image as a manufacturer of the most desirable and technologically advanced sports cars. Current market conditions favor such initiatives, as demand for unique and powerful models among collectors and enthusiasts remains high.
