Mercedes considered creating a compact electric G-Class, but is now hesitating

Mercedes is preparing a compact version of the legendary G-Class off-roader

Despite the iconic status of the Mercedes G-Wagen, the company has only now begun developing a more affordable compact version. A prototype of the so-called “baby G” is already being actively tested, and new spy photos allow for the best assessment of the scaled-down design of the new off-roader.

This prototype has camouflage film with hundreds of graphic images of the lowercase letter ‘g’, which is a playful nod to the model’s reduced size. However, the car’s overall outlines are clearly visible.

Contrary to expectations, Mercedes did not take the path of simply reworking the GLB model. Instead, the design of the full-size G-Class was proportionally reduced with some subtle refinements. Initial impressions of the result are very positive.

Preserving the classic image

The front end features round headlights and a pronounced hood, just like the original. The side panels have received flared wheel arches, square side windows, and prominent roof rails. The rear includes small taillights positioned low on the bumper, as well as a large spare wheel mount.

Mercedes CTO Markus Schäfer stated that the baby G is being developed as a completely unique model, not an adaptation of an existing Mercedes platform.

The company is creating new modules, suspension components, and wheel systems specifically for this car, although it will not use the traditional ladder frame construction.

Electric vehicle and hybrid

The project was initially planned as exclusively electric, but Mercedes is now reconsidering this strategy. Recent reports indicate the possibility of adding a hybrid version, which is a practical solution given the current state of the electric vehicle market, especially in North America.

If Mercedes does offer a hybrid variant, it could use the same powertrain as the new CLA sedan. This system combines a 1.5-liter engine, developed jointly by Geely and Renault Horse Powertrain, with electric assistance, delivering 208 hp and 380 Nm of torque. The manufacturer could retune this setup for the baby G to achieve more power, better suiting the character of an off-roader.

Technical specifications of the electric version

As for the fully electric version, it could receive an 85 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of up to 450 miles (724 km) and powering two electric motors. This would be a very impressive figure, considering the full-size electric G580 has a range of only 280 miles (450 km).

When this model finally appears in showrooms, it will not be the only compact off-roader on the market. Competitors are already preparing, including rumors of a compact Land Rover Defender version, which also aims to offer the same rugged image in a smaller package.

The development of the compact G-Class reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are trying to make iconic models more accessible to a wider range of consumers without sacrificing their character. The success of this model could significantly expand Mercedes’ audience in the SUV segment, especially among urban residents who value image but do not always need a full-size vehicle. Technical solutions, such as the possibility of choosing between an electric vehicle and a hybrid, demonstrate the flexibility of the company’s approach to market challenges.
