Mercedes hopes that the compact G-Wagen will attract buyers for whom the large model was inaccessible

Mercedes Prepares a Compact Version of the Iconic G-Class

After many years of rumors and teasers, Mercedes-Benz is approaching the start of production of a compact SUV that will inherit the distinctive appearance of the full-size G-Class. The new model, already being called the “little G-Wagen,” retains the square proportions and uncompromising character of its bigger brother but will receive more modern contours.

Key expected characteristics of the new car:

Design and Platform

In new spy photos taken during cold-weather testing in Europe, it is clearly visible that the compact Mercedes is significantly shorter and lower than the standard G-Class, but the family resemblance is obvious. Round headlights, likely to be combined with a massive radiator grille, can be seen through the camouflage.

Former Mercedes chief designer Gordon Wagener noted that the “little G” should look “a bit more modern than the big one.”

One of the interesting design details has become the small triangular side windows in the rear section. The car retains the classic G-Class stance but smooths out sharp corners, giving it more streamlined shapes.

Technical Features

The compact G-Class will be built on a completely new platform that has nothing in common with the traditional architecture of the full-size model. Engineers have abandoned the body-on-frame construction, which may raise questions about off-road capabilities and traction characteristics.

Former technical director Markus Schäfer called this platform a “miniature frame construction,” noting that it inherited key characteristics of a traditional frame, especially in suspension geometry and wheel dimensions.

This change is expected to provide more comfortable on-road behavior, improved ride smoothness, and convenience for daily use.

Powertrains and Market Prospects

The compact G-Class will debut exclusively as an electric vehicle, which may surprise part of the market, especially in the USA. However, it should be remembered that this is a global model, and demand for electric vehicles remains high in key markets such as China and Europe.

Details about batteries and electric motors remain unknown for now, but it is logical to assume that Mercedes will use technologies from the new electric CLA and GLC models. This should provide sufficient range and performance.

The question of the appearance of versions with internal combustion engines remains open. Demand for the full-size electric G580 with EQ technology has not been very high, so Mercedes may consider the possibility of adding hybrid or traditional powertrains in the future.

The new model is positioned as a direct competitor to the downsized Land Rover Defender in the premium SUV market. The reduced size and more modern platform could attract those buyers for whom the full-size G-Class always seemed too large or inconvenient for city use. The success of this model could significantly expand the audience of the iconic off-roader, making its distinctive design more accessible to a new generation of car enthusiasts who value both off-road capabilities and everyday comfort.
