Mercedes hopes that the compact G-Wagen will attract customers who were not drawn to the full-size model

Mercedes Prepares a Compact Version of the Legendary G-Class

After years of rumors and teasers, Mercedes-Benz is nearing the start of production for a compact SUV that has inherited the classic, brutal look of the full-size G-Class. The new model, reduced in size but not in character, is set to become a competitor for the Land Rover Defender in the premium compact SUV segment.

Here are the key facts about the upcoming novelty:

Although these are not the first spy photos, the new images provide the clearest view of the car during cold-weather testing in Europe. The model is noticeably shorter and lower, but the family resemblance is obvious.

Design and Architecture

Beneath the camouflage, familiar round headlights can be discerned, likely paired with a massive radiator grille. The front end is high and upright, although the overall body lines are slightly more streamlined than those of the full-size version. The car retains the classic G-Class stance but smooths out the sharp angles. Former Mercedes design chief Gordon Wagener noted that the “little G” was supposed to look “a bit more modern than the big one.” This is confirmed by one of the interesting details—the small triangular side windows in the rear section.

The compact G-Class is based on a completely new platform, different from the traditional architecture of the full-size model. It abandons the ladder-frame chassis, which may raise questions about off-road capabilities and towing strength. However, this should improve comfort during everyday driving on public roads. Former technical director Markus Schäfer referred to this platform as a “miniature ladder frame,” explaining that it inherits key characteristics, particularly in suspension geometry and wheel dimensions.

Powertrain and Market Strategy

The most important question remains the powertrain. The compact G-Class will debut as an electric vehicle, which may be surprising given the current market situation, especially in the US. However, it should be remembered that this is a global model, and interest in electric vehicles remains high in key markets such as China and Europe.

Details about the battery and electric motors are not yet known, but it is logical that Mercedes will use technologies from the new CLA and GLC electric vehicles. This should provide a reasonable range and sufficient performance. The question of whether versions with internal combustion engines will appear later remains open. Demand for the full-size electric G580 with EQ technology has not been particularly high, so Mercedes may consider adding hybrid or traditional options.

The emergence of the compact G-Class reflects the general trend of diversifying SUV lineups aimed at attracting a new audience. It is a step towards democratizing the iconic image, which could expand the brand’s presence in urban environments where large dimensions are often a disadvantage. The model’s success will largely depend on a successful balance between design heritage, everyday comfort, and stated capabilities, as these are precisely the qualities that fans of the G-Class name expect.
