Mercedes Creates a New Model Specifically for the American Market, to be Produced in the USA

Despite having a huge production facility in the USA, most Mercedes cars for the American market are imported. This creates certain difficulties, which is why the brand decided to start production of a new model in Alabama.

Details are still limited, but the company characterizes the future newcomer as a “key segment vehicle.” Production will start in 2027, with the model being specifically adapted to the preferences of American buyers.

Although the information is quite general, it hints that this involves the localization of an existing model. The Tuscaloosa plant specializes in crossovers – it assembles the GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV. This gives reason to assume that the new production could be the popular-in-the-USA GLC, which is currently produced in Germany, China, and Southeast Asian countries.

Mercedes emphasizes that this decision confirms their commitment to the North American market and is part of the “local production for local consumption” strategy. Since 1997, the plant has produced over 4.5 million vehicles, including about 260 thousand last year.

The company also stresses its contribution to the US economy, as two-thirds of the plant’s output is exported. CEO Ola Källenius stated that Tuscaloosa has remained an important production center for 30 years, and the launch of the new model underscores long-term investments in the American market.
