Mercedes Abandons Exclusively Electric Version of Compact G-Class

Mercedes’ Plans for the Compact G-Class Have Changed

The new compact SUV from Mercedes, unofficially called the “Little G,” was initially planned as an exclusively electric vehicle. However, due to market changes and cooling demand for electric cars in some regions, the company has decided to expand its offering. Now, in addition to the fully electric version, the model will also receive a hybrid powertrain. Launch is expected in 2027.

Here are the key expected characteristics of the future novelty:

Hybrid Version and Change in Brand Strategy

The decision to add a hybrid is part of a broader course correction by Mercedes-Benz. The manufacturer is moving away from earlier plans for a complete transition to electric vehicles. Management, including CEO Ola Källenius, has confirmed that internal combustion engines will remain in the lineup at least until the 2030s for flexibility in various markets. This decision was influenced, among other things, by moderate demand for the electric version of the full-size G-Class.

The hybridized 1.5-liter unit is developed by Mercedes and manufactured by Horse Powertrain in China.

The power of the hybrid setup in the new off-roader has not yet been disclosed. It is known that in the CLA 220 hybrid model, this engine paired with an electric motor develops 208 hp and 380 Nm of torque, allowing for short-distance travel on electricity alone.

Electric Version with Impressive Range

For proponents of pure electricity, the model will also remain available. According to sources, the electric car will receive two motors and all-wheel drive as standard, emphasizing its off-road character.

The main trump card is expected to be an 85 kWh battery pack. Estimates suggest it will provide a range of about 450 miles in the WLTP cycle. This is a very high figure for a car with such an aerodynamic shape. For comparison, the full-size electric G580 EQ has an official range of only 280 miles.

Design and Platform

In terms of design, the “Little G” will be the heir to its bigger brother, retaining characteristic features: round headlights, vertical glazing, three side windows, and a spare wheel on the rear door. Unofficial renders give an idea of a compact and very original-like image.

An important technical feature is expected to be the use of a separate ladder-frame platform, rather than unification with other Mercedes passenger models, such as the electric GLC or C-Class. This should ensure true off-road durability and capability. This approach will differentiate the novelty from many crossovers that only imitate off-road ability and will allow it to compete with the expected Land Rover Defender Sport.

The price for the new compact G-Class is expected to be significantly lower than the full-size electric variant, possibly about half, making the iconic design and brand capabilities more accessible to a new wave of buyers.

The change in plans for the powertrains of the future compact G-Class clearly demonstrates how dynamic the modern automotive market is. Manufacturers are forced to quickly respond to fluctuations in demand and regulatory challenges. Mercedes’ decision to offer both a hybrid and an electric car speaks to the desire to meet the diverse needs of customers worldwide, where infrastructure and attitudes towards electromobility vary greatly. The success of this model could set a trend for other premium brands facing a choice between rapid electrification and a more gradual, hybrid transition.
