Mercedes CLA EV to support 400V and 800V charging
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the new electric version of the CLA in the U.S. will be able to work with both 400V and 800V charging stations. Initially, the car was limited to only 800V charging, which caused surprise given the limited fast-charging infrastructure. However, starting in 2026, American buyers will have the option of a converter that will allow the use of both standards.
The company explained that the first CLA EV models, arriving later this year, will demonstrate fast-charging capability of up to 320 kW. This will allow for up to 325 km of range in just 10 minutes. A Mercedes-Benz USA representative noted:
After initial limited deliveries of vehicles to showcase the CLA’s capabilities, starting in 2026, customers will be able to order versions with a converter, unlocking access to over 140,000 charging stations across the country.
Why was it initially limited to 800V only?
Mercedes aimed to highlight the advantages of 800V fast charging but acknowledged that different regions have varying infrastructure. In Europe and the U.S., charging networks differ, so the company decided to adapt to local conditions. While fast charging is an undeniable advantage, limited charging availability could have deterred potential buyers.
By the way, the CLA EV will offer two versions: one with 268 hp and another with 349 hp and all-wheel drive. The company is clearly aiming for a balance between performance and practicality, and these latest changes in the charging approach only reinforce this strategy. It’s worth noting that the decision to add support for 400V stations is a step toward customers who want greater flexibility in operating their electric vehicle.
